Nigeria's Muhammadu Buhari: I can't promise Chibok schoolgirls will be found
On the first anniversary of the kidnapping of the schoolgirls, the president-elect admits their whereabouts still remain unknown
Nigeria's president-elect Muhammadu Buhari
has admitted that it may never be possible to find the group of more
than 200 schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram the north-east town of
Chibok exactly a year ago.
A still from a video released by Boko Haram in April claiming to show the missing Nigerian schoolgirls
Nigerian and Chadian troops fighting on either side of the border have retaken several towns seized by Boko Haram as “caliphates”, and many of the group’s commanders are now scattered and on the run.
Some are believed to have groups of the girls in their custody, and may be prepared to free them now that they are in a position of weakness.
Mr Buhari visited the town of Chibok, in Nigeria's remote north-east, during his election campaign, despite security concerns. Twenty-one of the 57 girls who escaped are currently studying at the American University of Nigeria in the nearby city of Yola.
